This adaptive reuse project has become the hub of social activity in the bustling North Loop district of Minneapolis. The design team worked with the Aparium Hotel Group to transform this historic heavy timber structure, formerly a manufacturing space, into the Nordic themed Hewing Hotel. After years of underutilization, the metamorphosis created an unexpected byproduct: the ground level has become the communal living room for the entire neighborhood. The top floor with its seasonal sauna and hot tub serves a similar function. As part of the conversion, brick walls, wood floors and timber columns and beams have been exposed to provide a framework on which the contemporary interior design was layered onto. The full height atrium that brings daylight into the center of the building features the work of a local artist.
